Journaling Challenge 20: Roots and Wings

Hi Everyone! Laura here again for today’s Friday Journaling Challenge! :D

Today we’re going to examine the metaphorical idea of “roots and wings” (and how these concepts apply to your life) in order to kick-start your journaling.

Typically, when you hear the term “roots,” you think of the physical object — trees, flowers, plants. Or you might think of heritage, lineage, genealogy… your past and what you come from (your “roots”). But for the purposes of today’s challenge, think also of the phrase, “rooted in…

Everyone has something in their life that grounds them. It might be a person (or people — family, etc.)… it might be a place… it might even be an object. But when things get hectic, sad, stressful, harrowing… everyone tends to have something that they turn to when they’re searching for a way to regain order and control over life’s “little moments”. It’s that something that grounds you and keeps you rooted in sanity.

We also tend to have something in our life that frees and inspires us, giving us courage to tackle things that scare us… fortitude to take on the things that seem insurmountable… or freedom to try something new.  It’s like a reserve of strength/courage/power.  Sometimes this isn’t the same thing that grounds us — sometimes it’s another person, another place, another object.  It’s that something that gives you wings and lets you soar (to state it in a rather cheesy and cliché way!).

This Week’s Challenge

This week’s challenge is to write about your “roots and wings.”

  • What grounds you? Is it a person? A place? An object? etc… write about what you turn to when you need something to help ground you.
  • What inspires you? Is it a person? A place? An object? etc… write about the thing in your life that frees you, gives you courage, etc.
  • Is it the same thing?

No matter what you choose to write about, come back and let us know what you’ve done! If you’ve blogged, you can link us up. If you’ve journaled on paper, take a quick picture. If you’ve used your journaling to scrap a page, let us have a peek  and link us up to your gallery. Whatever you decide to do, we’d love to have you come and share it with us!
