Welcome to Tell Your Story Every Day!
We are a new sister site of The Digichick, a digital scrapbooking community whose main goal is to help you “Capture, Record and Preserve Your Life’s Story.” It is my hope and prayer that this new site will help this mission statement of ours come to life in an amazing way this year.
First—let me introduce myself! My name is Nicole Seitler and here’s a little bit of my story:

In 2004 a girlfriend of mine sent me a stack of hand-stamped baby thank you cards that changed my life forever. It started me down a path of creativity… and my crafty endeavors seem to keep getting bigger and bigger!
I found that I had a heart to teach and share papercrafting with others. So, I started hosting in-home workshops and created a rubber stamping blog. But papercrafting wasn’t enough for me and I soon found that I was passionately in love with scrapbooking.
Then one day in 2006, while browsing the web late at night, I stumbled upon digital scrapbooking. For the first time it dawned on me that behind every piece of scrapbook paper I loved there was another person—an ordinary person, just like me. And I could learn how to make beautiful papers, too.
So, in 2007 I opened my own shop selling my designs. Then in 2008, I was invited to join The Digichick. In 2009, I was given the opportunity to take over this wonderful site… a great responsibility that I have thoroughly enjoyed for the last three years.
So, what’s this thing all about?
This year at the Digichick, we wanted to do something special.
You see, I’ve been around long enough to notice that there is an epidemic the digital scrapbooking world…
While all digital scrapbookers passionately love this great hobby of ours, only a small number of people are actually scrapbooking.
And even fewer are printing out their pages and making them into books.
Digital scrapbooking was a dream come true for many people who discovered that they were frustrated with their ability to record their special memories using paper, scissors and glue. Paper scrapbooking can be a difficult art to master! You’re dealing with real world product that you can ruin and destroy.
In digital scrapbooking, we all know that there’s nothing quite as wonderful as using CTRL + Z to undo something!
In paper scrapbooking, you could spend three hours moving around two photos and a journaling card… and still not like the way things look.
Digital scrapbooking gives you the tools to easily alter photos and elements.
Don’t like the color of something? You can change it. Don’t like the size? You can change it. Want to use something more than once? There is freedom in digital scrapbooking!
But here is our downfall:
It is too easy to focus on the beauty in digital scrapbooking and forget what scrapbooking is all about!
Getting back to the heart of scrapbooking
I’d like to stop for a moment and ask you to watch this little video from Paper Coterie with NY Times bestselling author Kelly Corrigan.
It will change your life.
Go, on. Click it.
Gaah! That video just hits me right in the heart…
What I most desire for us all to remember is that this passion and love for memory keeping is why we got so excited about scrapbooking in the first place!
And this is what Tell Your Story Every Day is going to be all about.
Are you telling YOUR story?
Over the years, I have seen countless layouts created that are full of intricate layers and clusters with gorgeous photographs… but no journaling in sight. Heck, I’ve even done this myself.
Theses pages have no story to tell. They are just a couple of decorated photographs.
And more recently, I have heard a number of people say that they have made dozens and dozens of pages but they have never printed them. This saddens me even more!
No one can touch them. No one can read them. I wonder, are these people just praying that their backups never fail them?! Sigh.
The key thing we have forgotten is that the goal of scrapbooking is to be recording our most precious memories, telling our stories, writing it all down while these things are still fresh in our minds!
Pictures are beautiful things. Scrapbookers love the art of photography. But, I’m sorry, most photos are not worth 1,000 words—photographs cannot speak for themselves. If you were given a photograph of your great-grandmother as a child, what would you know about it by just looking at it? Where was it taken? Why was it taken? Is there a story behind this or that little detail? Wouldn’t you want someone there to tell you all about it?
As a memory keeper, this is where YOU come in. That is your role!
You have a story to tell.
And that story matters.
If you don’t tell it, no one else will because no one else can. Who else knows the words you have in your heart?
I can already hear the the excuses welling up inside your head. You’re not good at this. You’re not good at that. You don’t think you can do it. Well, stop!
Instead, what you need to always keep in mind is that the only way to get better at something is to keep. on. doing. it.
So, please—this year, tell that negative voice in your head to go take a hike. Let’s move on from degrading self-talk that this year—in the name of getting things done and getting our memories into books.
I want you to remember: It doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.
But you do need to be telling your story.
And you need to recommit yourself to doing that NOW.
Will you join us this year as we seek to do this together?

Oohhh…I love this Nicole.
Report comment Report commentI’ve been trying to tell my stories for years, and I keep pushing it away and away every year. I think my problem is about language. I love to use English on my layout but my writing is not good enough.
May, do you put English on your pages for you, or just for the galleries? I’m sure that nobody will judge you (or they shouldn’t!) if your English is not 100% perfect, and people would probably be willing to help you if you ask how you could make your journaling sound more natural in English. That being said, if you’re telling the story, then who cares if your journaling is perfect?
Report comment Report commentI totally agree, Rebecca!
May, do NOT let it bug you. {hugs} It’s your story. Enjoy writing it and let go of your worries.
Report comment Report commentYou are totally right, Nicole!!!!
I will give this a try!
It’s NEW YEAR, and I should be a NEW ME. Get rid of those worries,
Report comment Report commentYAY!!!
Thank you so much Rebecca for your comment!
I put English on my pages for myself and also for the galleries. So people can read it. This is usually for layouts I made for creative teams, but I’m thinking of making some layouts for myself which I might put Thai on it instead.
One of my resolutions this year is to print out a photobook with stories about my little girl. I usually blog about her when she was a baby and I want to deliver what I have written on the blog into a photobook. So one day she can read it. I also like to tell my own stories as well.
And yes, I realized that people doesn’t care if my English is not that good. They read it and still can understand what I want to tell.
Report comment Report commentI bought a little point-and-shoot, toss-in-my-purse camera yesterday. I bought three 8×8 albums and filled them with my recently printed layouts yesterday, too. I’m ready to begin scrapping more and telling our story!
Game on! I’m excited!
Report comment Report commentwould love to set this as my Resolution for 2012! With all the CTing that I do, the pages for me and the journalling is getting neglected rather, so this will be great to give me a nudge!!
Report comment Report commentI’d already decided to get more of my arty pages printed this year, as finances allow as here in the UK it’s not cheap for the larger sizes. Will watch out for offers for books though now and get something put together for the kids!
Thanks for the inspiration! Love it!
Bernie x
Hi Bernie…
Okay I so hear you with not printing out your pages due to the cost involved if you live anywhere outside of the US… I live in New Zealand and the cost and the shipping would mean that I couldn’t afford it… I’m a single mama on a limited budget…
Then someone sent me in the direction of ArtsCow and I haven’t looked back since! They often do deals for 8 x 8 and other sized free books (you pay shipping) now that I can handle!
And I can honestly say… hand on heart I love the quality of their books too! Only once have I ever been disappointed in a page and even then it wasn’t the whole page it was only the photo that I had run an action over that got a bit orangey… MY Fault not theirs!
If you are interested in trying them out use the referral link below and we will both get a few free offers…
http://www.artscow.com/?Ref=772474
And NO other than any free offers I may receive from referrals I am NOT getting paid to say this… I just LOVE their products…
Report comment Report commentCheryl
Cheryl, I’ve got the same problem.
I couldn’t find any place to print my layout here in Thailand.
Scrapbooking is still very new here. paper scrapbooking just arrived a few years.
Don’t ask about digital, most people still doesn’t know about it unless they live abroad or went to study abroad.
But, I just found some places in Thailand where they offer photobook printing. The price are quite high though, but I will try them out when I got my first book done.
About Artscow, do we have to create our photobook on their site? Can we do it on PS and send the files to them for printing?
Report comment Report commentHi May…
I know how you feel… I still get weird looks when I mention digi scrapping…
Okay so in answer to your question yes you can create pages on their site… HOWEVER I never do! Can’t add shadows which would bug me senseless!
I create all my pages in photoshop and upload them to albums at ArtsCow… there is one thing to keep in mind however their safe zone is a little bit out… so if you don’t want important bits cut off and still want full bleed printing, resize all your page elements in a little bit more…
I prefer to have a white border around the edge of my pages so I reduce them on their site by a small amount… This eliminates important bits being cut off during the printing process…I am happy to explain this further if you are interested in trying them out…
Also have added my gallery link from there… okay I haven’t shown off any recent books lately but you will get the idea from what is there at the moment…

Hope this helps

thanks for this, I am in the UK too, and wondering how I can make this a system that I can practically use and do, so will definatly check them out!
I’m in. This sounds AMAZING.
Report comment Report commentThank you! Thank you! Thank you! This really speaks to my heart and I can’t wait to join along and tell my story!
Report comment Report commentNicole – you’ve read my mind! and you’ve also sold another copy of Kelly Corrigan’s book! hahaha! I made my first photobook this year after the birth of my first grandson and I will definitely be making more. Thank’s for the inspiration and have a Happy New Year!
Kelley
Report comment Report commentAaaaah!!!! This is soooo awesome, Nicole! What a fabulous idea! As if you weren’t already inspiring!!!! This really is going to be amazing…I just know it!
Report comment Report commentSounds Awesome Nicole!
Report comment Report commentWOW! that video was great! Looking forward to seeing what this is all about!
Report comment Report commentThanks for this new site! Great motivation for me.
Report comment Report commentI can’t wait to see what’s coming!
Report comment Report commentso true! I am one who desperatly wants to remeber these precious little moments of time, and I spend ages making layouts on the computer that I end up not thrilled with, or even if I am thrilled with, I don’t usually print them out. So, time to change that, and start telling the story, stumbling and bunbling as it may be, I’m sure it will be loved by those I love the most!
Report comment Report commentThis is going to be a fabulous year and sharing my story will be so much more fun seeking to together!
Report comment Report commentAfter two great years of digiscrap, this past year I hardly scrapped at all and I’m sad about that. I wrote myself scrapping goals for this year and this is right at the heart of it. As a busy mom with a full time job I don’t have all day to scrap as it is so I’m focusing on what’s important. Ill be checking back her too now.
Report comment Report commentI didn’t even realize that I NEEDED to do this until I found this website!
Report comment Report commentI took a memoir writing class and began writing my stories. Then I began to look for old pictures to go along with the stories. Finally, I started scrapping pages to go with my stories. This scrapbook has so much more meaning than all the others I have made over the years, because it tells my story from my heart, the way I remember it.
Report comment Report commentYou had me at hello
Report comment Report commentWell said, my friend! Well said!
Report comment Report commentWow! Thanks! Just wanted I needed to hear!
Report comment Report commentThis is amazing and exciting! I have been guilty of no journal pages myself. Thanks for posting this!
Report comment Report commentNicole… totally brilliant idea… have been telling my story lumps, bumps and all for a while now… sometimes I forget to write enough, sometimes that’s okay it doesn’t always need lots of words… but sometimes that’s not so good…
and as Sharyn said its always a nicer journey sharing it… expect to see me back often…
Report comment Report commentOh wow awesome idea! I do journal every once in a while but mostly come up empty on what to say or think it sounds dumb so I leave it, but it’s true though that we should tell our story with each picture, so whenever someone else is looking at it, they know the story behind the picture. Thanks for the inspiration! ♥
Report comment Report commentits so exciting, seeing how many people are interested in this!
Report comment Report commentYour idea sounds wonderful and I will do my best to follow along! I’m one of those who takes thousands of photos per year; I’m also a digi-scrapper and used to print out my pages regularly, but due to some very stressful family circumstances during the past two years, I’ve only printed out a very few and have hardly made any new LOs at all…
Hoping this blog/project will spur me on to be more diligent!
New Year’s Hugs & Blessings to you and your family, Nicole <3
Report comment Report commentComing from someone who recently inherited a bazillion photos, I can honestly say they are not worth 1,000 words…in fact, I really wish they would utter at least “who” they are sometimes. I don’t want the same for my daughter who will one day inherit my excessive library of photos. I want my story to be told…Thank you for the inspiration.
Report comment Report commentI am a little in this boat too! I have a small suitcase of my grandmothers old photos (and generations before her). I LOVE old photos, but I don’t even know who most of thes people are, even a name would be so helpful! Its good motivation isn’t it!
Report comment Report commentAh, Nicole, you’ve hit it on the head for me! My motto this year is Better Done than Perfect. I usually choose a word but I have noticed that I am getting less done, because I want it done *right*. And at the end of the year, I have little to show for it (although to my credit, I am printing my LOs!). I love the recommit part, and the new blog is a great way for me to keep motivated.
Big hugs!
Report comment Report commentI’m pretty good at telling my story and am happy with my scrapbooking right now, but a little inspiration and help along the way never hurt!! I’m really excited to see how this site evolves.
I am finishing up a big AAM project and my regular book for the year as well. I know that some fresh ideas, perspective and encouragement will really help me in the months to come.
Report comment Report commentI will join you Nicole! This is actually one of the issues I seen happen to myself with digital scrapbooking. It became creating layouts that were nice, but they weren’t what I wanted them to be. I was creating layouts for others sometimes… which made me drop from working with creative teams. It caused me to completely stop digitally scrapbooking. I’ve also never once printed off a layout. I have 6 of them I created in the last year that are even the correct size to print. I found that I didn’t even care enough to keep the larger sizes to print them. That is a very upsetting point. I’ve now stopped completely and began to work on Project Life. I’m so committed to the project, and it makes me happy again to finding a way to express and share the stories that are important to me, and important for me to share with my daughter.
Report comment Report commentYou’re so right! Who will tell the story of me and my family if I don’t. I will be here to follow!
Bring it on!!!
Report comment Report commentThank you for that kick in the rear. I’ve always been very critical of my journaling on my scrapbook pages. However, I need to make sure at least the basic information is captured and why I chose to scrap those pictures. Why did they speak to me, what story is behind the picture, and what do I want others to know?
I can’t wait to hear more from you, please keep me on track and motivated.
Report comment Report commentThanks
Shelly
I so need this. I am sad to say my ‘layouts’ folder for 2011 has maybe 20 LOs for the whole year. My 2010 folder has over 100! I need to get re-focused and get my stories told! Looking forward to seeing where this site leads us
Report comment Report commentYeah! I can’t wait to see where we go on this road. This is why I scrap!
Report comment Report commentOn no truer words have been said. I just printed my first lot of pages out after 4 years. Roll on this year were I will get some more printed. I am into this roll on.
Report comment Report commentThanks for working so hard to set this up! This is definitely a real need for so many of us. In the busyness of today’s world its so hard just to stop and enjoy every day moments. I’m glad for a place like this that can help us all learn to capture those every days and not just capture them – cherish them and write them down so we can remember them for years to come! I’m really looking forward to the coming year!
Report comment Report commentThanks for this post! I’m just finishing my Dec Daily and I love all the details I was able to capture. I’m definitely going to be focused on journaling in 2012.
Jen
Report comment Report commentSigh…you hit the nail on the head of a few things percolating at the back of my mind for some time…I would be honoured to take this journey with you all!
Report comment Report commentThis seriously is awesome. I am the person who doesn’t journal. I have pages either with just a photo (and then people wondering, “Okay, so what is this…just a quick shot or a special moment?”) or I have a sentence or two. I already decided that this year was going to be my creative year in, scrapping more, being more crafty, etc. But my – towards the top – goal was to journal more on my pages. So, this is just perfect! Can not wait
Report comment Report commentI totally agree! I respect the people who can make beautiful pages with their beautiful post-processed photos and decorate them with beautiful clusters. But I’ve got an 8yo who only has her first 4 months fully documented and a son who doesn’t even have that much. However, I journal a lot, and when I look at paper pages I did 6 years ago, they hold memories and stories that I don’t remember now, but I’m glad I documented them then. I’m excited about your philosophy in the post above and I look forward to seeing what you have in mind to encourage us all to keep the memories more.
Report comment Report commentI am so, so, so excited about this!!!! I love your mission and what you are about…the same things that motivate and inspire me. The art of digital scrapbooking has really given me something to preserve our memories with in a creative way. I am so motivated now to get everything printed out and in books for my family and friends to enjoy!
Report comment Report commentThis is exactly the motivation that I need to just DO it! I’m excited at this prospect and want to THANK YOU for helping me to bring it back into perspective – it’s time.
Report comment Report commentIs there no RSS feed for this site? I would love to do this, but I will never remember to visit. : (
Report comment Report commentThanks for mentioning that! There are always RSS (or Atom) feeds on blogs like this, but they aren’t always easy to find. So I’ve gone and added a link in the sidebar. It’ll probably move around a bit, but that’s where it is right now.
Report comment Report commentI’m one of the guilty as charged…haven’t journaled much at all…and have never printed a darn thing yet. I LOVE this idea tho….and if nothing else – it will help me START to do these things on a regular basis
Report comment Report commentI have been keeping diaries/journals since I was 9 years old (31 years ago) so I’ve long felt the journaling is of great importance. That’s why I love my Project 52, in which I make a scrapbook layout each week with photos from that week. I rarely ever handwrite in journals anymore, but I journal a lot in my Project 52 pages. And yes, I print them. I order photobooks from Blurb usually.
I am interested in what you’re doing. I’m looking forward to finding out more.
Report comment Report commentI’ve made a concentrated effort over the last year or so to get past the pretty pages to the meaningful ones. The woman in the video makes excellent points, but I think it’s worth mentioning that parents/adults aren’t the only ones who forget and end up with just a few vivid memories. The kids do to! I was asked recently why I scrapbook and this is my answer:
I Scrapbook for my children. Besides giving them life, the most valuable gift I will ever give them is their memories. They’ll be able to look back at these pages to see how their lives unfolded. I am doing books for each of them that cover 2 years. By the time they are adults they will have 9-10 books that index and record their entire lives. I really don’t remember many details of my childhood, and it would be priceless to me if I had scrapbooks to look back on. Not to mention that my husband and I will have copies too reminisce over in our old age!
Report comment Report commentI love digital scrapbooking. That’s why I created a digiscrap blog just for my obsession ….er….hobby! I figured that having a blog for it will motivate me to digiscrap more to record memories spent with my family and friends…. But I’ve been so busy lately, it was hard to find time to create anything.
I think this new site of yours will be just the motivation I need to get back on track. Can’t wait to see what you’ve all got in store for us this new year!
Report comment Report commentSpot on. I don’t think I made one LO last year, and I have gotten so discouraged with all the “pretty” pages. I want “real” pages. Adding you to my google reader;)
Report comment Report commentYES!!! This make me *so* happy. I can’t wait.
Report comment Report commentI think I have just had an idea for anyone in a place that isn’t able to get the plastic pocket pouches very easily or economically (like the UK) – I am planning to use the folders that are easily available in newsagents for collecting cards (right now the trend seems to be Moshis monster cards, or match attax football cards etc) – you can get them as separate A4 sleeves in some office places too I think. The sizes are slightly different, and each page is a set 9 pockets, all exactly the same, but I think its a good place to start! Don’t know if that will help anyone else, but it feels like a brainwave for me!
Report comment Report commentYes! Who cares if what you use isn’t “name brand”–it doesn’t have to be name brand to be beautiful. Go, you!
Report comment Report commentSo glad to see you doing this, Nicole. You know how much journaling means to me and that’s is my favorite part of scrapbooking. I can’t tell you how frustrated I’ve been looking at people’s pages with no journaling. I WANT to hear people’s stories, not just look at their pretty pictures.
Report comment Report commentHey, girlfriend of mine! Look at what you started, huh?
Report comment Report commentI totally agree with you and I’m a journaling addicted, it’s very hard for me to create a page and not tell a story. The worst part for me has been printing, because here in my city I haven’t found a great print service. I’m willing to use some online services, however I’m not comfortable with them yet. Any suggestions?
I’ll bookmark this blog because I want to look for motivation to keep on my goal of printing and setting albums, no more digital files only for 2012.
Thanks so much, you’re always so amazing!
Report comment Report commentDani, this is the best post I know of on the subject: http://thedailydigi.com/12-different-photobook-printer-reviews/
I hope that helps!
Report comment Report commentWOW… there must be something in the air, this post sums up exactly where I am with my scrapping. I’m guilty of no or very little journaling, I’m guilty of pages on the computer only but… my aim this year is to document our life everyday or at least weekly and get the stories of our life down in words and the pages printed into books. Nicole, I don’t think you could have picked a better time for me (grin) to start this so thank you!
Report comment Report commentOh my, this is bold. And true! I just wrote a blog post about my own frustrations at the moment at pulling together albums of pages that are gorgeous, but less than meaningful in a documenting way. http://happinessscrappiness.blogspot.com/2012/01/new-yearnew-scrap-rules.html Will be follwoing along here and joining in! Thanks!
Report comment Report commentThis is a wonderful initiative, Nicole! I took a 6 months break from scrapbooking earlier this year and came back with a renewed vision on my scrapbooking and it’s exactly what you’re describing in this post. I don’t allow myself to get side tracked anymore. I scrap for my kids. I want them to remember all these precious memories when they’re adults. I journal on every page and I will ALWAYS try to use a kit in function of my photos and not the other way around anymore, not even with CT kits. After 6 years as a digiscrapper, I’m very excited that for the first time I will be caught up with scrapping an entire year of events, feelings, thoughts and soon I will have all those (meaningful!) layouts in a fancy photobook. And it feels so good! I don’t care anymore about what the latest new trends are, I am determined to keep focussing on what is important for ME. And it took me 6 years to get to this point! Isn’t that ashame! I will be following this blog with great interest, Nicole and I always enjoy your writing style
Report comment Report commentGreat post Nicole! I too am guilty of not getting my story out. My problem is a tad different from those posted however. I became a digital scrapbooker in 2008, visit The Digichick weekly and love to shop! Therein lies my problem. I am too busy shopping, downloading, unzipping and organizing my purchases to even scrap let alone journal. I have no problem journaling, just very little time to scrap as I am too busy organizing my files. What a dilemma huh!?! Is there a 12-step program for those of us who haven’t met a digi sale they can’t pass by? Still, digital scrapping is totally awesome and the best thing to happen to my scrapbooking life. I only hope more scrappers realize the versatility and go beyond the printed/bound books and get a little more adventurous. It’s a whole new world people!
Report comment Report commentNicole – I loe everything you have said and totally agree with everyone about the costs to print out papers. I make my pages in 12 x 12 then convert them to 8 x 8 and print them out myself. I have also done two books at Arts Cow (artscow.com) that came out really well. They were something like $8.00 with free shipping and shipping from Taiwan (?) is very expensive. Try them, you will like them! Also I have a request – I have some trouble with my eyes that are 64 years old, and I was wondering if you could please use black ink in the future to print this blog. This gray is really hard for me to make out all of the letters, thus hard to read! Thank you for considering this request. And keep talking about everything digi, this is wonderful!
